Fishing in Cold Weather
by Al Winco
Fishing in cold weather is fun if you dress properly and the wind / sun cooperate.
Hypothermia can be a very dangerous problem if you are not prepared.
The morning of 12/7/06 was beautiful in Bucks Co. on the Delaware River. Air temp 36 degrees - water temp. 39 degrees.
Here’s a list of clothing I wear before "blast-off" in river or lake.
|
1-Cabela's expedition grade long johns 2-600 gram gortex/thinsulate boots w 1pair of liner socks and 1 pair of heavy wool socks. 3-Cabela's turtle neck shirt 4-Cabelas insulated -1 piece camouflage coveralls 5-Watch cap 6- Damart balaclava 7-Fleece gloves 8-Deer hunting hand warmer muff w/ 2 chemical handwarmer packets inside 9-Simms wind-stopper fingerless gloves with not so fingerless Damart glove liners. |
Dress warmly when this guy is driving:
I swore earlier this year that I had no interest in fishing the river with water temps of 39 degrees
Dave and I had a great day on the lower Delaware today fishing for ccc-o-l-d water smallies.
We managed 6 smallies to 15" on 4" tubes and my Real Crawl artificial soft- baits.
Here's some pics of our fish:
Some additional pictures of our day of cold-weather smallmouth bass river fishing
Hot soup, coffee, smallmouth action and a great fishing companion made for an enjoyable day on the water.
It is essential to use a jet boat when operating in shallow riffles and shutes plus the experience of knowing where you can run at current water levels.
Cold water kills!
