Post-Spawn Largemouth Bass
|
Post spawn is a difficult time for anglers. The females have moved out of the shallows and are recovering from the rigors of spawning. Each trip following the spawn seems to produce a few 2-4 years old dink bass as anglers become more frustrated waiting for the recovery Hot-Bite to begin.
I prefer to give the bass a minimum of 2 weeks following, the Full-Moon Spawn. This is a great time to clean-up the boat. make those annoying minor repairs you've been putting off and organizing the tackle. Log some points w/the BOSS and get all the items on the "Honey do list" completed.
The big females will pull out of the shallows, move to the outside edges of weed beds and slowly gravitate to major points just outside of the spawning coves. They begin cruising the ledges and drop-offs on these point in 8-15 feet of water when feeding. The Carolina lizard, Rigged Creature, Rigged Smallie Crawlie are top producers when they are slowly worked up the ledge. The hit is usually a dull, repeated head bob or nod feeling on the line.
I prefer the 4 ¼
Stickworm Jr and the 5 ¼
Magnum Stickworm fished
weightless along the outside
weed line
edges. Under windy conditions, I will add a 1/16-1/32 Water Gremlin Bull
shot 12 in front of the worm. I always use a
small amount of the
Pros Soft Bait glue where the line enters
the bait to keep the bait in place without sliding backwards while
working up the ledges or along weed lines.
Good day on the water
Here's a trip where the post spawn action and the aforementioned techniques produce a good day on the water.
I had the pleasure of fishing w/Shillins 24 @ Marsh Creek Lake today. A balmy 47 degrees had us scampering around Dave's boat @ 5:15 a.m., loading our equipment. It was a bit cold for our short pants as Dave electric motored across the foggy lake. The action was anything but cold as we put four quick bass onboard w/ our Carolina rigged lizards
The action slowed a bit so I fed them a new prototype bait - the Rigged Smallie Crawlie #33 - Mudpie. Instant successes on the 1rst cast as one close to 4 pounds came aboard.
Fish of the Day - 6 lb Largemouth
A few cast later, the fish of the day hit .
A magnificent 6 pound
Largemouth inhaled the soft- bait jig and then proceed to put on a
show of power, diving under the boat near the end of the battle and
surfacing on the other side, very close to the trolling motor.
Continued Action... Dave & I switched back and forth between 3 baits as the action continued.
We switched over to the 4 1/4 Stickworm Jr #05,electric violet grape and continued to put fish in the boat. Here's some additional pics including a small Musky that ate the jig.
Productive Baits
We ended our day with 25 bass brought onboard. Here's a pic of the productive baits of the day.
