Smallmouths attack 'em in streams/rivers. Fish open-hook in a vertical position (pointed-up) w/an Owner 1/0 Mosquito/Gamakatsu #2-4 Octopus Circle hook -OR- Horizontal nose hooking  w/the aforementioned  hooks. These  are very productive hook rigging techniques for open-water but will produce line twist.  We recommend you use a # 2 Spro-Power Swivel (available @ Cabelas) used 12" in front of the bait.

Adding a 1/16 Water gremlin “Bull-Shot” in front of the swivel allows a quicker descent in the deep, heavy current smallmouth holes while maintaining that important spiral on the fall. It is not recommended to place a weight against the nose of the bait
